THE NEXT
GENERATION OF PROGRAM NOTES
MISSION
STATEMENT
Many people feel uneasy about classical music because
they feel there’s something they don’t understand about it. Whatever
it is that they feel they don’t understand, the usual program notes are of
little help: the biographies of the composers and the summary descriptions
of the musical themes won’t tell them what they need to know.
A new approach to program notes is clearly
needed. Audiences need to be told why they should care about
the music. They need an intelligent, non-technical discussion of the
important issues involved, the historical, literary and artistic connections
and the special features that make each great work of art unique.
With 16 years of experience as the program
annotator of The Cleveland Orchestra, I can open some secret doors to the
music and do more than simply informing you – I want to turn you on to the
work of the great masters of the past, and make you curious about what is
going on in the world of music today.
